One of our favourite places to eat in our own city. Great staff and quality food! You have to order the stuffed sausage and the seabass.
We were very disappointed with Cal Pep. We went there expecting to be impressed given the rating. However, the food was average, the service was rude and pushy, poor atmosphere (bright lighting and cramped) and you constantly feel rushed. There's no menu, so you don't get to choose, which is fine if that's traditional, but portion sizes were tiny and we only got 4 dishes plus some bread. For that and a couple of drinks we got hit for €90 Euros!
After less than an hour, they pushed us to pay the bill, then poured neat vodka into our drinks to ruin them and make it clear we were no longer welcome. We were so shocked!
We had already been to a few other Tapas restaurants in the El Born neighbourhood, all of which are better on every level and cheaper than Cal Pep. Try nearby Tapeo or Bormouth instead - both amazing.
Very good basic catalan style food, definitively better than you'll find in most casual old-school restaurants like this. Sadly, they've refined it as a tourist trap and has a "no menu" system where the waiter picks dishes for you, hiding that it is very expensive here compared to other places of similar quality.
In addition, I personally disliked the direct pressure to tip, which is not common in Barcelona. It took away from the experience. I would recommend going to the bars in La Boqueria instead, which has a lot of the same well-prepared food, lively vibe and tourist friendliness and give this a miss.
I understand why there is a line up an hour before this place opens!
If you are in a smaller group you will sit at the counter and be able to talk with the chefs who are preparing your six course tapas. This option has the next customers standing directly behind you a foot away impatiently waiting for a seat. If you have a larger group you sit at the back at a table and get table service and you are served different tapas than the counter.
So make sure you know which option you want!
Very good and they allow about two hours for the table service to sit and talk and drink wine!
Very rude right from the start both times I tried to go there. A man working at the bar ignored me in favor of what seemed like his friend who walked in half a minute after me. Won't be making a third attempt.
The place is really good, one of the best of seen in Barcelona. We were lucky to get place here since is so popular. The service is amazing, we had so much fun with guys there on the bar. We really enjoyed it a lot.
Overrated and expensive. Expect to spend at least 40 euro per person. The meat is done well and the material is fresh, but the dishes are generic. The no menu system means that you live at the mercy of the waiter and can easily go over €100. We had a plate of salty clams with less than 15 very tiny clams (2cm or 0.7 inch long) and it turned out to be €17.5 not including the 10% tax. This remains the only European restaurant charges tax seperately. With the entire restaurant cramped with tourists, this is the definition of a tourist trap. So so disappointed.
This place is overpriced.
The food is good, like any other traditional tapas bar, but the service is a permanent rush. My plate was dirty when I sat, I had to clean it with my towel. 4 tapas shared in two for 90 euros with two drinks, that's too much for such a service. What's in there there isn't in any other tapas bar for less? Authenticity? No comments.
This place is full of locals and tourists and their food is pretty good but not the best. Also the service is very bad. They are too busy to take care of you and price is absurd. I was charged 17 Euros for 4 prawns as they were 190 Euros per kilogram.
Ben cuinats. El preu. La qualitat ho val.
Really nice and good atmosphere and very professional staff! The tapas where delicious. I def recommend but be careful about prices they don’t have menus.
Great food and staff. On one hand, interesting you don't know exactly the menu. On the other hand, you don't know what will be the price or if you will like the food:) And a litlle bit in a hurry, you feel you need to eat quickly leaving space for others at the counter.
Tapas bar with a focus on seafood. Workers can be seen carrying fresh seafood from the market as the shop opens. There is often a lineup. We were not given a menu, instead we were interrogated by our waiter who suggested dishes and we just went with it. Absolutely fantastic - best meal we had in Barcelona ft pan con tomato, squids, sausage, tortilla (this was the best of the best). Drinks came quickly, while hungry people lined up behind, waiting for their chance. Highly recommended
Arnaque à touristes. Aucune carte, prix exorbitants.
